Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy co-driver Ronan Comerford had his first experience of a European rally at the weekend.
The County Armagh-based navigator contested the Monteberg Rally in the West Flanders region of Belgium alongside Clare-based driver Niall O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan is competing in the Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup Belux in Belgium and Luxemburg this season in a Peugeot 208 Rally4.
The Monteberg Rally uses the same roads as the famous Ypres Rally and Comerford used the event as an opportunity to get familiar with the terrain ahead of a possible outing in Ypres in June.
They finished 28th overall in what was Niall’s first outing in the car.
“It was a great experience, a very good event and very relaxed,” said Comerford.
“The rally used three stages that were used in the Ypres WRC event last year.
“Serious cuts and speed. Timing-wise, it was international timing and WRC-style timecards which were nice to use. The car performed great. I am very happy with it all and looking forward to the next event out there.”
Niall’s father John was also competing in the event, and he finished 81st in a Citroen C2.
